Magnolia Plantation is a unit of the Cane River Creole National Historical Park (CARI). The NPS-owned property is 18.25 acres and located in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, approximately eighteen miles south of the city of Natchitoches. The plantation was originally 2,570 acres. Magnolia Plantation was first known as the LeComte-Hertzog Plantation, which was deeded to Jean Baptiste LeComte through a 1753 French land grant. The cultural landscape report (CLR) details the physical history of Magnolia Plantation from prehistory to 2006 using information and data from primary and secondary sources, including park archives. This CLR provides regional and historical context by discussing the natural systems of northwestern Louisiana and the growth of cotton plantations in the area. This CLR thoroughly discusses the history of Magnolia Plantation during three periods of time: 1753-1860, 1861-1941, and 1942-1997. The CLR then provides an overview of Magnolia Plantation at the time the CLR was written during the early 2000s. Existing and historic conditions are then compared to determine the site’s significance and integrity. Treatment recommendations for the plantation are given following the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Treatment. Preservation, rehabilitation, and restoration are offered as treatments of the cultural landscape at Magnolia Plantation.
