Jackson Lake Lodge National Historic Landmark District: Part II Cultural Landscape Report, Grand Teton National Park, National Park Service

This Part II Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) for the Jackson Lake Lodge National Historic Landmark District, located within Wyoming's Grand Teton National Park, consists of a narrative and illustrated treatment plan that proposes both short and long term management strategies for the District's cultural landscape resources. It is based on management goals of the NPS such preserving historic landscape character, public access, natural resource conservation, recreation, and interpretation. The plan also considers maintenance issues that have the potential to significantly impact character-defining features of the landscape. The Jackson Lake Lodge, the District's namesake, was constructed between 1953 and 1955. It was designed by former federal supervisory architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood for the Grand Teton Lodge and Transportation Company, one of several enterprises funded my American philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The District is significant for its association with the modern movement in the National Park System and as an exceptionally important example of American architecture and landscape architecture. The lodge is the first building complex in a national park that embodies modernist architectural principles, heralding the transition from rustic to modern style within the NPS. The predominantly International style lodge offers expansive views of Jackson Lake, the Teton Range, and Willow Flats from its perch on the edge of a natural terrace. The District is characterized by these views, circulation features such as roads and trails, structures within the complex, and vegetation. The period of significance extends from 1953 to 1960, ended with a period of landscape improvements designed by Spencer & Lee and completed by Olson Construction/Construction Management. Using information contained in the 2007 CLI and obtained during the 2014 field inventory, the Jackson Lodge NHL District landscape was divided into five cultural landscape character areas to be used by the park and its partners for management and maintenance purposes. The treatment plan presents overall treatment recommendations to address particular issues identified within each character area. The recommended treatment approach is preservation to retain the district's high level of integrity, with some selected rehabilitation and maintenance to accommodate changing visitor and staff needs. Part I of the CLR consists of a Cultural Landscape Inventory, prepared in 1999 and revised in 2007. This section of the report presents the chronology of physical development, a comprehensive analysis of the landscape's features, and documentation of the significance and integrity of the landscape. Together, Parts I and II of the CLR can by used to implement appropriate treatment for the Historic District and aid in determinations of impact and effect on its cultural landscape. Numerous individuals from the NPS and the current concessionaire, Grand Teton Lodge Company (GTLC), were involved in the development of this CLR by supplying critical information requested by Logan Simpson and detailed reviewing of draft versions.
