Fort Donelson National Battlefield (FODO) is an approximately 1,310 acres site located in Stewart County, Tennessee, on the banks of Lake Barkley and in Calloway County, Kentucky, on the banks of Kentucky Lake. FODO is significant for its association with the American Civil War and for landscape architecture associated with the commemorative efforts of the War Department and the National Park Service. The CLR determines that the historic resources of FODO are generally in good condition. Additionally, the historic resources of FODO maintain a high level of integrity in the aspects of location, design, workmanship, and association, while the aspects of setting, material, and feeling were determined to have a moderate level of integrity. The overall treatment recommendation for FODO is rehabilitation with a focus on preservation of existing historic landscape features, while allowing for improvements that enhance the integrity of the historic landscape. The study area for this cultural landscape report (CLR) includes Fort Donelson, the battlefield, the Fort Donelson National Cemetery, the Dover Hotel, Fort Heiman, a Confederate earthwork fort, gun batteries, defensive earthworks, interpretative trails, roads, natural forest, modern buildings and structures, and other landscape features.
