A summary of fire ecology activities and program information for the Park/network including fire effects plot workload, staffing, management objectives and monitoring results, and planning, fire monitoring, communications, and research. Also included are staff accomplishments/areas of focus, future program direction and other optional information (e.g. data analysis graphics or presentations, annual highlights, publications, program challenges, unique solutions to problems, collaboration, photographs of monitoring/fire activities, and suggestions on FFI). Stability returned during the 2016 season for the Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA) Fire Ecology Program. No turnover in permanent staff allowed all scheduled work to be completed while personnel participated in a wide variety of opportunities supporting incidents nationally and locally. Support continued for the Saguaro National Park (SAGU) Fire Ecology Program, incorporating field data collection on multiple plot types as well as database management expertise. With monitoring of 35 Fire Monitoring Handbook (FMH) plots, 22 Rapid Assessment Protocol (RAP) pilot sampling plots, and 38 Composite Burn Index (CBI) burn severity plots at GRCA; 50 RAP plots on the Kaibab National Forest; 26 FMH plots at Chiricahua National Monument (CHIR); and incorporating 12 unplanned plot reads from an early-season wildfire, it was a demanding, diverse, and ultimately successful year.
