The George Washington Carver National Monument was formally dedicated in 1953 to memorialize and preserve the 240-acre birthplace home of George Washington Carver. Carver was one of the leading agricultural scientists, educators, and humanitarians in America during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Management of both cultural and natural resources at the park has been a part of the planning process since the 1980s, including the initiation of a prairie rehabilitation program and subsequent management recommendations. The purpose of the Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) is to guide George Washington Carver National Monument in identifying the best approach to managing the cultural and natural resources comprising the historic landscape. The park has prepared a Cultural Landscape Report/Environmental Assessment (CLR/EA) that evaluated four alternatives. The NPS alternative selected for implementation is Alternative 4: "Honor, Commemorate, and Interpret the Life and Legacy of George Washington Carver by Employing a Combination of Agricultural Heritage and Exhibits of Plants Known to Him." The combined CLR/EA was prepared to document and record the history and current conditions of George Washington Carver National Monument, and to guide its future treatment and use.
