Bird surveys at Klondike Gold Rush NHP: 2015 summary

Surdyk SL. 2017. Bird surveys at Klondike Gold Rush NHP: 2015 summary. Natural Resource Report. NPS/KLGO/NRR—2017/1442. National Park Service. Fort Collins, Colorado

Coastal Waterbird Surveys (loons, grebes, cormorants, herons, ducks and geese, plovers and sandpipers, gulls, alcids, and kingfishers) were conducted at Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park in 2015. The surveys serve to document avian distribution and abundance throughout the Park. Fourteen surveys were conducted from April 23rd to September 9th and 54 waterbird species were detected. The North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) and Alaska Landbird Monitoring Survey (ALMS) were conducted as part of a continuous monitoring program to document the diversity and abundance of avian species breeding in the area (Photo 1). Conducted in late June, the BBS detected 44 species and the ALMS detected 41 species. Bald Eagle nest monitoring continued at five historically active nests, one of which successfully produced a fledgling. In addition to the results of systematic surveys, this report documents opportunistic bird sightings, mortalities, and notable events from the Skagway and Dyea areas.
