The Boott Cotton Mill is a historically and architecturally significant complex of industrial buildings in Lowell, today consisting of nine mill buildings, the Counting House (former mill office), and the Boardinghouse. Together, the structures and the Mill Yard represent the evolution of the Boott Cotton Mill over its one hundred and eighteen years of operation from 1836 to 1954. The buildings were configured to enclose an outdoor space. The Boott Mill Yard was integral to mill operations in various ways through its history. Following a rehabilitation of the Counting House and the Boott Mill No. 6, concerns about safe visitor access, interpretive potential, and aesthetic appearance of the Mill Yard brought the eastern portion of the Mill Yard to the forefront of the park's priorities. In response, Lowell National Historical Park acquired an easement for the development of the remainder of the eastern portion of the Mill Yard, and also requested assistance with preservation planning from the Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation. This report presents a historic overview and three conceptual alternatives for the eastern portion of the Mill Yard. Several planning studies were conducted prior to the rehabilitation of Boott Mill No. 6, including the General Management Plan, a Historic Structures Report, and a Cultural Resources Inventory.
