This report, presented as an amendment to the original Historic Structures Report (1956) and its Supplement (1959), was created to address concerns about the integrity of parts of the building and its systems. In addition to a review of the original HSR, a series of investigative site visits was conducted between August 1999 and November 2000. These included interviews with park staff and a thorough investigation of the building to determine its existing condition. The investigations were primarily visual in nature; only nondestructive means were used to examine the building fabric and the causes of material failure. The recommendations are summarized in a table, organized by problems of repair. The report contains historical context, a chronology of use and development, descriptions of features, and graphic documentation. The Andrew Johnson Homestead was constructed in multiple phases between 1848 and 1869. Much altered after his death in 1875, the house was acquired by the NPS in 1942. Fifteen years later, it underwent a thorough restoration under the direction of Henry Judd.
