This report satisfies research needs as outlined in the Historical Resource Study Proposal. Each of the buildings studied in this report was heavily involved in the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. As the battle broke across the landscape, the Federal command attempted to defeat the Confederate left, involving the Mumma (Spielman) Farm; the center, involving the Mumma and Piper Farms; and the Confederate right, involving the Sherrick (Dorsey) Farm. The report details how the battle events affected each of the farms and the subject buildings. Identity of the owners at the time of the Civil War, successive ownership, alterations, and illustrations are also included. Each subject structure is the original, although each has undergone structural change to varying degree.
