This Historic Structure Report intends to highlight the historic character-defining features of the Mumma House and present treatment recommendations for their preservation and rehabilitation for continued use. The Mumma House is a composition of elements assembled since the Civil War. After the house was burned during fighting at Antietam, the family incorporated the remains into their reconstruction, and many subsequent additions and remodeling have occurred in the 19th and 20th centuries. The recommended treatment for the exterior is preservation and repair, followed by continued preventative maintenance to maintain the 1961 condition. Rehabilitation and adaptive use is recommended for the interior if significant historic fabric, character defining features, and spatial arrangements can be preserved. The current project to finalize the HSR was carried out as a project agreement between Antietam National Battlefield and the Historic Preservation Training Center. In 1989, the National Park Service started a project aimed at the long-term preservation of the Mumma House. During the General Management Plan updating process, in 1990, the Mumma Farm was targeted for eventual adaptive use as park offices. The origins of the report are in the work conducted by the Williamsport Preservation Training Center, predecessor to the Historic Preservation Training Center, beginning in 1990. The report was first released in 1992 as the Preliminary Draft Copy of the Physical History and Analysis Section of a HSR for the Mumma Farm House, written during a three-year stabilization project by the National Park Service.
