This report provides the architectural data for the existing County Jail at Appomattox and recommends a procedure for its rehabilitation. There is little evidence related to the construction of the building because county records were destroyed in a 1892 fire. The County Jail is a three-story, 19th century brick building, standing at the corner of the village green. The existing structure replaced the original jail building, which was constructed in 1846. From existing evidence, the construction of the County Jail was completed after April 1865 and was therefore not present during the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. The appearance of the new jail is believed to be much like the previous jail. The report describes the existing conditions of the structure and materials, as well as proposed uses, architectural recommendations, and photographic evidence. Although it was not part of the scene in April 1865, it is architecturally significant as it represents a building style almost identical to the original jail (1846) and may incorporate some of its building materials.
