This study, containing administrative and historical data for the County Jail at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, is the result of a number of years of research. It proposes that the structure be rehabilitated to supplement the historic scene while also providing for an interpretive exhibit and storage space. The research activities included examining available state and county records, contemporary newspapers, and interviews. Little conclusive evidence about the history of the structure was able to be obtained, but the report suggests that enough evidence was uncovered upon which to base a series of logical conclusions. The narrative divides the findings into several subjects, each describing a portion of the history that begins with the First Jail. The report is accompanied by a bibliography and photographs.
