This report provides documentation of the history, architecture, and surrounding context of the Bocock-Isbell Stable at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. It proposes that the exterior of the structure be reconstructed to complete the Bocock-Isbell complex of buildings as they appeared in 1865, contributing to the overall historic scene. The interior would be used as a two-stall garage. The Bocock-Isbell House and outbuildings were built during 1849 and 1850. Originally, this complex of buildings included the house, a smokehouse, a kitchen and servants quarters, a well, and a stable. By the time the park was created in 1940, the stable had been lost from the scene, likely collapsed due to neglect. The exact date or circumstances of the stable's removal are unknown. Similarly, no definitive evidence of the date of construction is available. Based on the data collected for this study, it is suggested that the stable was most likely part of the Bocock-Isbell group in 1865. An understanding of the community itself provides evidence for the presence of the stable at that time. The village was a collection of semi-independent households with a degree of self-sufficiency, where citizens would have maintained their own transportation and supply of basic necessities. The report provides a historical overview of the individuals and property associated with this structure during the historic period. Personal accounts from more recent residents of the area are also provided as evidence. One paragraph sections on archeological data and landscape data complete the report.
