The reconstruction of the County Court House building, the exterior of which is a replica of the 1846 structure, was completed in 1964. The reconstruction was undertaken to unify the historic appearance of the village square and to provide for use as a modern Visitor Center. The Court House and County Jail were located within the "Village Green." The selection of this site was influenced by surrounding features, such as the Richmond-Lynchburg Road and existing structures. The symmetrical approach to planning can be seen in the decision of County officials to choose this location for the structure. The Architectural Data section is the most detailed area of this report, with a selection of photographs and drawings documenting the reconstruction. Other sections provide reference to more comprehensive study of the historical and archeological data.
