A summary of fire ecology activities and program information for the Park/network including fire effects plot workload, staffing, management objectives and monitoring results, and planning, fire monitoring, communications, and research. Also included are staff accomplishments/areas of focus, future program direction and other optional information (e.g. data analysis graphics or presentations, annual highlights, publications, program challenges, unique solutions to problems, collaboration, photographs of monitoring/fire activities, and suggestions on FFI). The 2017 season brought dramatic change for the Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA) Fire Ecology Program, with the permanent Assistant Lead Monitor position changing hands near the beginning of the field season, and the Fire Ecologist leaving GRCA in September. In part due to the turnover in permanent staffing, the crew was only able to hire 2 seasonal crewmembers, resulting in a reduced crew of 4 for the core season. Still, the crew monitored 46 Fire Monitoring Handbook (FMH) plots; 54 Rapid Assessment Protocol (RAP) pilot sampling plots at GRCA and 40 RAP plots on the North Kaibab Ranger District (NKRD); 119 Composite Burn Index (CBI) burn severity plots between GRCA and the NKRD; and 29 Southern Colorado Plateau Network Inventory & Monitoring (I&M) plots. It’s worth noting that of those, 89 were immediate post-burn measurements conducted between November and December. While it was a busy year for plotwork, crewmembers also worked on a variety of prescribed burns and wildfires both locally and nationally, and ultimately it proved to be a very diverse, successful, and rewarding year for the program.
