This study presents the cultural history of the Village Green in Appomattox Court House as of 1865. The scope includes available information on fences, roads, walks, trees, shrubs, and other landscape features. At the time of the study, there were plans to rebuild the Court House building for use as a museum and park headquarters. The report was prepared because the surrounding landscape features of the Village Green would be part of the restoration, and many of these features had been altered or were no longer in existence. The Old Court House building had burned in 1892, the fence was removed in 1894, roads and walks were removed or relocated, and the appearance of vegetation had changed since 1865. The Village Green was the center of the county seat of the newly-established County of Appomattox. The report comments that the soldiers describing the surrender scene were concerned with details other than the landscape characteristics, so descriptions of the historic scene are generally vague. By using wartime photographs, interviews, letters, diaries, and other sources, it is possible to obtain a fairly accurate and complete picture of the Village Green and its landscape features as they appeared in 1865. The study describes features and use of the landscape, as well as several recommendations for the restoration of the Village Green.
