Gulf Coast Network Inventory and Monitoring Landbird Monitoring Project
Granger W. Gulf Coast Network Inventory and Monitoring Landbird Monitoring Project. 2017. National Park Service
This project includes all documents and datasets associated with the Gulf Coast Network's protocol for monitoring breeding landbirds. In six National Park units, the Gulf Coast Network monitors landbirds using standardized point count surveys, with each of the 21-33 permanent points per park surveyed twice per breeding season. Monitored parks include Big Thicket National Preserve, Gulf Islands National Seashore, Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park, San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, and Vicksburg National Military Park. The network’s monitoring objectives for breeding landbirds are to document species richness and composition during annual visits to the parks and assess long-term trends in occupancy and the relative abundance or density for the most-common species. Monitoring birds in parks not only provides crucial information on the birds themselves, but can also be indicative of habitat changes within the parks. These data will also contribute to regional or national databases that further our understanding of continental bird population trends and provide a broader context for park-specific data. This project also had a pilot phase that was conducted in more parks and used some additional sampling techniques. The datasets and other products associated with the pilot phase are stored in their own project, linked under 'See Also' below.
