This protocol describes a framework for quantifying concentrations of mercury in larval dragonflies and fish in nine national parks within the Great Lakes Inventory and Monitoring Network (GLKN). Major portions of this protocol and its associated standard operating procedures are derived from an earlier draft version that focused on monitoring a wider suite of bioaccumulative contaminants (mercury, lead, DDT, PCBs, PFCs, and PBDEs) in aquatic food webs (water, seston, sediment, zooplankton, larval dragonflies, and fish) in six national parks within the GLKN (Weiner et al. 2009). Pilot work to implement the earlier version of the contaminants monitoring work was conducted from 2008 through 2012; analysis and discussion of that work is fully described in Wiener et al. (2016). Separately, a companion protocol for monitoring bioaccumulative contaminants in nestling bald eagles (Route et al. 2009) was implemented from 2006 to 2011, and 2014 to 2015 in the remaining three national parks. This protocol describes the key findings from those efforts and focuses more narrowly on monitoring of mercury in larval dragonflies annually and fish periodically across all nine national parks. Sections of this protocol that focus on sources and toxicity of mercury, and guidelines for assessing ecological and health risks of mercury are drawn nearly verbatim from Wiener et al. (2016).
