This Historic Structures Report for the Old Point Loma Lighthouse includes administrative, historical, architectural, archeological, landscape, and furnishings data about the structure. It was proposed to preserve the structure by preserving it to its appearance of 1887, refurnishing it to its interior condition at that time, and maintaining and displaying it as as exhibit-in-place to express the significance in the history of Point Loma and the operation of early Pacific Coast aids to navigation. Construction of the Point Loma Lighthouse began in April of 1854. It was recognized that it was too high above the sea for maximum efficacy, as it was frequently obscured by fog while the shoreline was clear. A new lighthouse was constructed by 1890, and the Old Point Loma Lighthouse was vacated. It was subject to forces of the elements and vandalism until it became part of Cabrillo National Monument in 1913, administered by the War Department. The structure was altered slightly and used sporadically by the military until 1933, when administration passed to the National Park Service. A copy of the Project Construction Proposal for the lighthouse rehabilitation, with cost estimates and construction data, is included.
