This cultural landscape report documents the physical history of the landscape, identifies significant defining landscape characteristics and features, and provides treatment guidance for the Dune Shacks of Peaked Hill Bars Historic District. A companion report "Dune Shacks of Peaked Hill Bars Historic Structure Report" provides details on the history, condition, and significance of individual structures in the district. When appropriate, these documents reference each other and use consistent nomenclature for the dune shacks, which are named based on the occupants who historically used each shack for the longest duration (rather than original owners or builders). A full description of the site's history, from early history to the time of publication, is divided into six periods. During the period of significance that has been identified for the district, 1920 to 1991, the seasonally habitable shacks evolved from a small cluster of buildings around the Peaked Hill Bars Life-Saving Station to over thirty dwellings dispersed along the shore. The number of shacks fluctuated as some were lost to coastal erosion and could not be saved by moving, and others were burned by accidental or intentional fires. Weather and water continue to alter the dune landscape, while active management of vegetation helps to stabilize the dunes. Treatment recommendations focus on long-term preservation of the historic district as a whole, including the structures, cultural landscape, and natural environment.
