This architectural data section for the historic structure report describes the physical history and architectural features of the Little Kinnakeet Life-Saving Station. The life-saving station is a complex composed of three structures, located within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The main building (1904 station) is a 1.5 story frame structure built in the Bungalow style or Shingle style. A lookout tower is at the southwest corner of the building. The kitchen/mess is a second structure west of the main building. The boathouse (1874 station) is northwest of these two features. The Little Kinnakeet Life-Saving Station was historically significant from 1874-1954, and it was under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Life-Saving Service from 1904-1915. The structure was planned for interior and exterior restoration to reflect the 1904-1915 period, commemorating the U.S. Life-Saving Service and depicting the lifestyle of the crews that served at the complex during that time.
