The proposed cultural landscape treatment action would implement the recommendations of the 1994 Cultural Landscape Report, provide a vision and direction for the protection of the park's cultural resources, and preserve the overall historic character of Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial. The treatment plan is an update to the treatment guidelines provided in the 1994 CLR. Work on the update began with research on the evolution of the park since 1994, followed by fieldwork to confirm and/or update conditions. The evaluations from the previous documentation were compared to current conditions; this comparative analysis is organized by landscape feature so it can be used with the treatment plan. Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial consists of a 352-foot high column on South Bass Island in Lake Erie, surrounded by 25 acres of landscaped grounds. Construction of the memorial began in June 1912, built to commemorate Commodore Oliver H. Perry's victory against the British on September 10, 1813. It stands as a reminder of the events of the War of 1812 and as a symbol of international peace between Great Britain, Canada, and the United States. The selected alternative will preserve the significant characteristics of the historic landscape while adapting the site to meet contemporary visitor needs and park management objectives. It will retain the designed historic landscape originating in the traditional Beaux Arts style of formal and symmetrical relationships of architecture and landscape.
