This Engineering Data Section of the Historic Structures Report for Broad Run Trunk describes the engineering and construction details that are known about this section of the canal. The original culvert, built in 1833, washed out almost entirely in 1846. Bridging the span by an aqueduct (trunk) increased the carrying capacity of the waterway. The original wooden trunk was hurriedly built in 1846 and soon had to be replaced. The report recommends development of a facsimile based on the usefulness of the original structure, with a super-structure modified from timber to steel and covered with timber that has been through a preservation treatment. Definitions of terminology are included, and a sketch shows existing conditions of Broad Run Trunk in 1961.
