This report contains the administrative, historical, architectural, archeological, landscape, and furnishing data for the Abner Cloud House on the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal in Washington, DC. It is proposed to use the structure as two employee residential apartments and a self-guided museum in the basement. The two-story field stone house and nearby mill were constructed in 1801 by Abner Cloud, Jr., a miller from Chester County, PA. The site is of historical significance because it stands near the former Little Falls Skirting Canal, forerunner of the C & O Canal, and the house is the oldest existing structure along the C & O Canal. During the period 1801 to 1812, Abner Cloud used the basement of the house for storage of the flour that he milled and for grain. Subsequent property owners continued to operate the mill. Based on inspection, research, and photographs, about 90 percent of the original structure still exists.
