Historic Structure Report, Architectural Data Section - Sideling Hill Creek Aqueduct, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal [Draft]

Crellin TN. 1975. Historic Structure Report, Architectural Data Section - Sideling Hill Creek Aqueduct, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal [Draft]. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Denver Service Center. Denver, Colorado

This report contains the administrative and architectural data supporting a project at the Sideling Hill Aqueduct (Aqueduct No. 8), located at mile 136.6 on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and 2.5 miles west of Dam 6. The aqueduct contributed to the operation and historic significance of the canal (1850-1924). It is a single span arch of 60 feet. Proposed preservation treatment work aimed to halt further deterioration of the structure and provide structural safety. The principal aspects of this work consist of constructing a steel frame on the upstream and downstream sides of the aqueduct arch, fabricated of vertical steel channel sections and horizontal timber bracing. The report describes the construction, physical characteristics, and use of the aqueduct to support that preservation work. At the time of this report, the downstream face of the aqueduct was in fairly good condition, while parts of the upstream face (spandrel and parapet wall) had collapsed into the creek. Sketches show the findings of the 1974 investigation of the aqueduct foundation, which is shown to be sitting tight on bedrock. Measured drawings included, prepared by engineering firm Dewberry, Nealon & Davis for NPS.
