The Cultural Landscape Report for the Ferry Hill property is the primary research document used by the NPS to identify and document features and qualities representing a landscape's historic significance and integrity. It was prepared following planning for the more intensive use of the property as an interpretive site. Part I provides NPS managers with an understanding of the physical evolution of the property's landscape, documents site history and conditions, and presents an analysis comparing the historic and existing conditions. Part II provides guidance for future management of the site. The Ferry Hill cultural landscape is significant for its association with three themes, related to: 1) the property's early agricultural and economic history from 1801 until 1861 and the existence of journals relating details of the daily lives of the owners, managers, paid labor, and slaves at the plantation; 2) the association of the site with the American Civil War; and 3) the site's relationship to the development of transportation in the region from 1755 through 1924. From 1980 through 2002, the site was used as the headquarters for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park. The relocation of the park headquarters in 2002 has created an opportunity for the property to be rehabilitated for use as an interpretive site.
