Gjessing FC. 1957. Historic Structures Report, Architectural Data - The Steeple Building, Virgin Islands National Historic Site, Preliminary Survey Report. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service. Eastern Office, Division of Design and Construction
This report provides a survey of architectural data for the Steeple Building at Christiansted, St. Croix, Virgin Islands National Historic Site. The survey, which was begun in the fall of 1956, included an investigation of the standing structure as well as research into available records, the creation of measured drawings, and a comparative study of similar structures in the Virgin Islands. The purpose of the report was to create a more complete image of the architectural history of the Steeple Building for use as guidelines in restoration. The research reveled what additional information might be found on the Steeple Building and other buildings in the Virgin Islands NHS, and also what documents contain information for the architectural and historical study of various buildings. The Steeple Building is located in the southern extremity of the wharf area in the town of Christiansted. The one-story masonry building was constructed shortly before 1753 by the Danish West India-Guinea Company which colonized St. Croix in 1734. In May 1753, it was consecrated as a Lutheran Church. Documentation in report includes interior and exterior photos of the structure and HABS documentation. The report proposes that the Steeple Building be restored to the 1795-1800 period, reproducing known building features of the interior and exterior. The intent is to rehabilitate it to a usable condition and restore the features that were known to exist without jeopardizing future restoration. The recommendations are divided into sections that can be done separately or together.
