Historic Structure Preservation Guide, Dudley Digges Dependencies
Staff. 1977. Historic Structure Preservation Guide, Dudley Digges Dependencies. Historic Structure Management Plan. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Denver Service Center. Denver, Colorado
In 1959-1960 the National Park Service completed reconstruction of the Dudley Digges House in Colonial National Historical Park. This house is generally accepted as a classic of its type and is representative of the kind of house owned by many colonial Virginia families. In addition the house is noteworthy as the home of Dudley Digges, Jr., a distinguished public servant during the Revolutionary War, and as headquarters for Union General McClellan during the Civil War. The home featured prominently in the walking tour of Yorktown. In 1974 the NPS rebuilt the Dudley Digges House dependencies. The Dependencies, or outbuildings, consist of the smokehouse, well, granary and kitchen. The reconstruction and future preservation of these buildings are important to the interpretive value of the Digges House because the buildings were typical and important structures in colonial households. It is the purpose of this Historic Structure Preservation Guide to help ensure the survival of the Dependencies long after their 1974 reconstruction by informing park personnel of appropriate preservation procedures. The Guide should provide them with a complete list of proper materials, supplies, and techniques to complete all repair and maintenance work for the four Dependency structures. Tables describe inspection, procedures, and frequency for different categories of maintenance activity. Measured drawings are included.
