The residence unit in the Dudley Digges House group in Yorktown was architecturally studied and restored in the 1959-1960 period, but that restoration did not include outbuildings. The house was to function as a park residence, but would be open to the public on special occasion or as needed. The house, a restored residence of the Revolutionary period, is strategically located and featured prominently in the walking tour of Yorktown. The house is generally accepted as a classic of its type and the kind commonly owned by many Virginia families. It was built for Dudley Digges, Jr., a prominent and influential citizen who was active in Yorktown affairs for some forty years. The dependencies or outbuildings would be helpful in interpretation, and therefore it was recommended that the kitchen, smokehouse, granary, and wellhead be reconstructed, both on the exterior and the interior. The report contains information about the family history, property development and use, descriptions of the known dependencies with drawings, and illustrations. This study is essentially concerned with three things: 1. The presentation of new findings, or evaluations. 2. The assembly of additional background material to serve development (reconstruction) and interpretation. 3. The satisfaction of additional requirements of the Part II structures report.
