The Plum Orchard Mansion was apparently started in 1898 and the last addition probably completed in 1906 or 1907. It was the dominant building of the estate created by Lucy Coleman Carnegie for her son George Lauder Carnegie and his wife Margaret Thaw. Architects were Peabody and Stearns of Boston, who also designed the Carriage House and other structures of Plum Orchard. It is not known whether the present Mansion was built on or near the site of an earlier and similarly elaborate mansion built by a previous owner. The Plum Orchard Mansion, Carriage House, and 12 acres of land were donated in 1972 to the National Park Foundation for eventual conveyance to the National Park Service. The mansion is an outstanding architectural example in the Cumberland Island National Seashore and the entire island. This report describes and evaluates the existing conditions of the building, which forms the basis for recommendations for corrective treatment emphasizing repairs. It also analyzes the sequence of construction through various additions for use in potential future treatment, operation, management, and interpretation. The report includes small interior and exterior photos, package estimating detail for rehabilitation, and drawings of the original mansion. This Historic Structure Report (Architectural Data Section) is one of two on historic structures in the Plum Orchard Historic District of Cumberland Island National Seashore.
