The purpose of this study is to identify, record, and analyze the character defining features of Boston village in Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area. This guide is intended for park management, designers, interpreters, and private property owners to use. It is recommended that historic landscape features be preserved and new construction be differentiated from the remaining historic fabric and adhere to the guidelines in the Secretary of the Interior's Standards. This is intended to serve as the basis for discussion of landscape preservation issues at Boston and does not represent an official NPS planning document. Two types of recommendations are included: general principles suggest the basic ideas and methods for preserving the built environment of Boston, and specific recommendations address specific character defining elements that are analyzed within this report. Boston, Ohio represents a remnant of canal settlement which, due to its physio-geographic location, has adapted to changing economies, transportation types, and social patterns. The landscape contains clues to the history of settlement and industry in the Cuyahoga Valley spanning over 175 years.
