This brochure serves as an introduction to cultural landscapes and an accounting of the elements of Ebey's Landing that constitute its status as a cultural landscape. The report centers on the national signification that after one hundred years of European settlement, the same early pattern of land use—the mix of farm, forest, village, and shoreline—still remains. The report segments the landscape into ten basic land areas that characterize the reserve, giving one a composite picture of a landscape rich in physical and historical integrity. The ten areas so described include the San de Fula Uplands, the West Woodlands, Coupeville, Penn Cove, Ebey's Prairie, the East Woodlands, Smith Prairie, Ft. Casey Uplands, Crockett Prarie, and the Coastal Strip. In addition to the natural landscape features of the area, the brochure also highlights the variety of historic structures that contribute to the cultural landscape. Particular attention is paid to barns and outbuildings, vernacular residences, commercial buildings, and structures constructed in the Italianate, Queen Anne, Bungalow, and Cottage styles. The report provides guidance on future maintenance, development, and advocacy of/for the cultural landscape.
