Written just four years after the National Park Service's acquisition of the Edgar Allen Poe National Historic Site, this report surveys the house, giving a chronology of the house, investigating persistent questions regarding the history of the house, and giving restoration recommendations. Holm concludes that the house is in relatively good condition, with no irreversible modifications being made since Poe's occupancy. In order to return the site to Poe's "rose-covered cottage," the report recommends demolishing the front portion of the house added in 1848, reconstructing the east facade, and recreating the garden. Holm also recommends restoring period-appropriate interior furnishings and converting the adjacent property to a wing for staff and visitor services. The published report also includes the National Park Service's comments on Holm's report, in order to help future researchers and interpreters.
