Glenmont was the home of Thomas Alva Edison from 1886, when he purchased the property, until his death on October 18, 1931. After that it continued to be occupied by his widow, Mina Miller Edison, until her death on August 24, 1947. On December 6, 1955, the house, grounds, and related estate structures were designated the Edison Home National Historic Site, in non-Federal ownership, by then Secretary of the Interior Douglas McKay. The property remained in that status, operated and maintained for quasi-public use under ownership of Thomas A. Edison, Inc., and its successor the McGraw-Edison Company, until August 3, 1959, when real property title was transferred to the United States by deed of gift. A major portion of the Edison Home and other historical estate furnishings were also subsequently transferred to the United States by donations from the Edison Family and the McGraw-Edison Company. The entire property so constituted was combined, under Act of Congress approved September 5, 1962, with the Edison Laboratory National Monument previously established in 1956, under collective designation as the Edison National Historic Site. This report consists of administrative and historical data sections. Written the same year as the national historic site was designated, the report serves to give an introduction to the site and its history. It traces the management of the property and the various rehabilitative work taken on since NPS acquisition of the property. While the table of contents mentions an architectural data section, no such data section is present in the report.
