As part of Thomas Edison National Historical Park, Glenmont is located within the historic residential community of Llewellyn Park, in the township of West Orange, New Jersey, approximately fifteen miles west of New York City. The 15.67-acre estate (historic portion comprises 13.54 acres) reflects the history of the Edison family, as well as early community planning. The Glenmont grounds include the Edison home, gravesite, garage, swimming pool, barn, greenhouse, potting shed and gardener’s cottage, and a variety of native and exotic trees and shrubs (Figures 0.1 and 0.2). This Cultural Landscape Report documents the historic design and evolution of the landscape, documents the changing historical appearance of character-defining features, provides contextual documentation on the Llewellyn Park residential subdivision, recommends treatment strategies for the long-term management of the landscape, and provides documentation that supports park consultation responsibilities. The report also documents the site's history before Edison's arrival, starting with occupation by Hackensack Native Americans.
