This report concerns the Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site, located on the slope of Las Trampus Ridge overlooking the San Ramon Valley, about 27 miles east of San Francisco. Eugene and Carlotta O'Neill had the Tao House designed and built to serve as their residence from late 1937 to early 1944. Over this period the O'Neills developed the grounds surrounding the main house to include a swimming pool, outbuildings, an orchard, and a courtyard garden within the walls that extended from the house. The O'Neills sold the house and property in 1944 and for the next 30 years the site was occupied by a single owner. This report focuses on design of the courtyard garden, some consideration will be given to the greater landscape systems that together comprise the Tao House site. As a whole, the site has several landscape areas (including the courtyard) that possess a distinct and significant relationship to the primary residence (and to each other).
