This reports suggests that the Fort Clatsop Replica be used as a historical exhibit and "house museum." Before it can be so used, the existing log shell, erected in 1955 by local historical and service organizations, requires reconstruction to remove elements admittedly not now historically accurate and to add features to bring the structure into conformity with what is known concerning the original Fort Clatsop built by Lewis and Clark in 1805-1806. Since the site of the Lewis and Clark encampment is devoid of any known physical remains associated with the explorers, the retention and use of the Fort Clatsop replica is intended to be an aid to reconstructing the historic scene so that visitors can gain a vivid and accurate impression of the hardships and loneliness endured at this spot by the members of the exploring expedition during the winter of 1805-1806.
