The following report accompanies the site plans and design drawings for selected landscape treatments at Fort Clatsop National Memorial. This package contains the written text, two existing conditions base maps at scales of 1"=100' and 1"=20' (maps 1 and 2), two site analyses at scales of 1"=100' and 1"=20' (maps 3 and 4), and the design plan at a scale of 1"=20' (map 5). The site plan as proposed in this report is the combination of two earlier alternatives presented to the staff at Fort Clatsop in early August, 1987. Alternative one was primarily concerned with the manipulation of spaces through the massing of trees and shrubs to enhance visitor circulation and access to interpretive sites. Open grassy areas and trees close to the fort were included in this alternative to provide large areas for interpretive demonstrations (although the landscape most likely would-not have looked like this in 1806). Alternative two attempted to recreate a more authentic scene/landscape around the fort, using the existing candle rendering and wood chopping areas as examples of how the rest of the site might look. The large grassy area in front of the fort was eliminated and most of the site was filled in with native evergreen trees which were "limbed up" to simulate an old growth forest. Through review of two alternatives, specific design and maintenance concepts from each alternative were discussed and generally agreed upon by the park staff and landscape architects.
