This report concerns the Enlisted Men's Barracks (HB-21) of the Fort Davis National Memorial. In operation from 1854-1891, Fort Davis serves as one of the greatest examples of a typical frontier military outpost of the U.S. military in the 19th century. HB-21 was constructed in August 1869, primarily from adobe, as local timber sources were quickly thinning. The interior of the North Squad Room, including the orderly room adjacent and to the north of this Squad Room, will be restored to the 1874 period. Note: The exterior of HB-21 was restored during the period of 1965 to 1968 with the exception of the mess hall wing, who's stone foundations were exposed during this period. The interior of the south squad room in HB-21 as well as the storeroom, bath and wash room, barber shop, and tailor shop were not restored at that time. These rooms, at present, will be used for park purposes as determined by park personnel.
