Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. It is proposed to restore "Old Bedlam" to sound structural conditions and to the external and internal structural appearances prevailing during the period 1881 to 1890. This report surveys the existing architectural structure, gives a brief history of the buildings construction and use, and details a period of emergency stabilization which occurred 1940-1949.
