Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. This report concerns Officers' Quarters E (Building no. 6) at Fort Laramie, a duplex residential structure originally built 1874-1875. The report proposes that one unit be furnished as a Post Surgeon's quarters of 1880, and the other unit remain empty for the time being. The aim of the program is to recreate the general atmosphere of the historic fort as occupied by the United States Army during the period from 1849 until 1890. The report also includes photographs of existing conditions at the site.
