Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. This historic structure report concerns the Old Guardhouse (building no. 8) at Fort Laramie. Originally constructed in 1866, the two story building is one of eleven historic structures which survive the military period. It was, at different points in its history, used as a guardhouse, prison, and magazine. In order to furnish the building to its 1866-1868 appearance, all vestige of its being used as a magazine must be erased. This report includes the work necessary to achieve this objective with documentary justification for such work.
