Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. This memorandum details the work performed to rehabilitate the Old Guardhouse (building no. 8) at Fort Laramie during 1955. First constructed in 1866, the structure served as a guardhouse until its conversion in the late 1870s to a magazine and, later yet, conversion to a cow barn by private owners after military abandonment. The work described in this report was sufficient to consider the Old Guardhouse rehabilitated to its original status with restored features of both the Guardhouse and magazine to facilitate interpretation of both phases.
