Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. This documented history document concerns the Sutler's Store at Fort Laramie, first constructed in 1849, just after the Fort was purchased by the U.S. Army. The document serves two purposes: first, it is the first rough draft of a chapter in the history of Fort Laramie which will eventually be written by NPS historians as a basis for museum planning, restoration, and other phases of the interpretive program; more immediately, the report serves to provide historical justification for improvements to the building which are urgently needed to arrest its rapid decay and properly preserve it as a significant historic structure.
