Fort Sumter is a masonry seacoast fort of the Third System of Seacoast Defense. It was the site of the Battle of Fort Sumter—generally considered to be the inaugural battle of the Civil War—wherein the North Carolina Militia bombarded the federal garrison at the fort. This historic structures report concerns the sally-port doors and shutters at Fort Sumter. Neither the proposed shutters nor the design for the Sally-Port door are actual restorations. The shutters are purely functional and are intended as a protection from vandalism. The doors are adaptations from the illustrations of the original Sally-Port which was on a different facade. The accompanying brief report is submitted as an explanation of the source for the additions and as a future record of the work done on the Fort.
