Fort Sumter is a masonry seacoast fort of the Third System of Seacoast Defense. It was the site of the Battle of Fort Sumter—generally considered to be the inaugural battle of the Civil War—wherein the North Carolina Militia bombarded the federal garrison at the fort. This historic structures report concerns the sally-port doors and shutters at Fort Sumter. It is proposed to close the left flank openings of the Fort by installing double doors at the main sally-port and also a door at the postern side entrance, so as to help stop acts of vandalism and to keep destructive sea water from flooding the Fort during severe storms.
