The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War, the Union victory that ended General Robert E. Lee's second and most ambitious invasion of the North. Often referred to as the "High Water Mark of the Rebellion", Gettysburg was the Civil War's bloodiest battle and was also the inspiration for President Abraham Lincoln's immortal "Gettysburg Address". The Gettysburg National Military Park protects and interprets the landscape of the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. This portion of the Architectural Data Section of the Historic Structures Report on General Meade's Headquarters includes the results of the architectural research and investigation, and the recommendations for the restoration of the house. The Part I, Architectural Data Section of the Historic Structures Report described briefly the existing physical conditions of the house. Before the restoration of the house is completed the grade conditions which cause the flooding of the basement must be corrected. The general physical condition of the building is poor and the process of rehabilitation and restoration will have to be, of necessity, very carefully done in order to preserve as much of the historic fabric as possible. At present there is no authenticated date for the construction of the house. The earliest date given by historians is for the purchase of the property by Mrs. Lydia Leister from Henry Bishop on March 30, 1861. During the architectural investigation, it was found that the wrought nails, transitional cut nails, Norfolk latch, plaster, interior trim and general construction methods) tend to place the construction date of the Meade's Headquarters (Leister House) in circa 1840.
