Historic Structures Report, Part I: The Leister Farm Buildings (Meade's Headquarters)
Tilberg F. 1959. Historic Structures Report, Part I: The Leister Farm Buildings (Meade's Headquarters). Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service
The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War, the Union victory that ended General Robert E. Lee's second and most ambitious invasion of the North. Often referred to as the "High Water Mark of the Rebellion", Gettysburg was the Civil War's bloodiest battle and was also the inspiration for President Abraham Lincoln's immortal "Gettysburg Address". The Gettysburg National Military Park protects and interprets the landscape of the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. This historic structure report concerns the Leister Farm Buildings (Meade's Headquarters) at Gettysburg. Buildings comprising this important farm group are situated on Tareytown Road, (State Rte. 134) approximately 300 yards east of the High Water Mark Monument. There are two buildings in this group, a barn and a house, that were constructed prior to the battle. The two buildings comprising this farm group are in generally good condition. The location of these two structures and the significant part they shared during the battle makes it imperative that re-roofing of them be accomplished as soon as possible. It is recommended that the two structures be re-roofed with hand-split shakes in order to maintain the scene as nearly as possible to its historical appearance. This farm group will be an important focal point from the new visitor center. Repairs to wood siding will be accomplished by normal routine maintenance.
