APHN Cobble Bar Community Monitoring: Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area (BISO) and Obed Wild and Scenic River (OBRI)

The overall goal of this long-term monitoring effort is to determine whether successional patterns (patch structure) and habitat quality/physical structure of cobble bar communities are changing over time. The protocols for the cobble bar monitoring have been designed to allow for the greatest amount of precision possible within the constraints of working in areas in which annual flooding and impervious substrates make the establishment of permanent plots difficult. To ensure transects are spatially distributed throughout each cobble bar, a restricted random sampling methodology will be used. Random transects will be placed within equally partitioned sections of the cobble bar. In order to maintain the greatest precision, measurements will be repeated on the same transects each sampling event. The sampling transects are located off a baseline transect in the forest edge, just beyond the cobble bar edge. The sampling transects extend across the cobble bar, from the forest edge to the edge of the river.
