Harpers Ferry National Historical Park preserves historic resources and commemorates the historic events that occurred at and around Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The park consists of portions of the Lower Town, the former Storer College campus, landscapes associated with the national historical park’s Civil War significance, and lands preserving the historic viewshed down the Potomac River. This Historic Building Report gives historical data considering Roeder's Store (Bldg. 5) at Harpers Ferry. Roeder's Store was likely erected in 1856. No definite record of use for the 1856-1861 has been established, but the first floor was likely utilized for a tavern or warehouse, while the upper floors were used as a dwelling house. The house was probably the residence of Philip Schaman, a gunsmith, in the 1859-61 period and Dr. Thomas Nicholson may also have boarded there.
